Comprehensive Review & Analysis
Going into Mewgenics, our biggest question was whether Edmund McMillen & Tyler Glaiel could bring fresh energy to the Tactical RPG formula without losing what makes the genre satisfying in the first place. Published by Edmund McMillen for PC (Steam), the game answers that question within its first hour. Players oversee a persistent cat household, selecting teams of four feline adventurers to embark on tactical expeditions across branching node maps, collecting food, furniture, and artifacts to breed stronger subsequent generations.
Moment-to-moment play in Mewgenics hinges on reading animations, respecting spacing, and knowing when to back off. Stepping into the boots of Boon (Household Companion / Merchant), assists the player in managing cat generations and upgrades.
On the technical side, our bench testing across PC (Steam) showed strong optimization once we dialed in a few key settings. Powered by Custom 2D Grid Engine, Mewgenics scales cleanly from entry-level rigs running a mid-range 6GB GPU up to 1440p and 4K setups backed by an RTX 4070 / RX 7800 XT. Frame times stayed remarkably flat during heavy particle exchanges, and the 3D audio mix made tracking off-screen hazards second nature.
Longevity in Mewgenics comes naturally from wanting to master its systems rather than chasing arbitrary daily checklists. While the UI could explain a couple of advanced mechanics more clearly early on, those minor rough edges fade quickly once you hit your stride. Mewgenics is a confident, deeply replayable achievement from Edmund McMillen & Tyler Glaiel.
